  • Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission (OFWC) received the formal petition from conservation groups.

  • Petition requests new measures to reduce Marine mammal and sea turtle entanglements.

January 22, 2026

  • ODFW issued the Industry Notice informing stakeholders and the public.

February 20, 2026

  • ODFW will present its assessment and recommendation to the OFWC at their meeting.

March 11, 2026 (90-day statutory deadline)

  • OFWC must either:

    • Initiate rulemaking, or

    • Issue a written denial of the petition.​​

Ongoing Requirements (If Rules Adopted)

  • ODFW must provide public notice within 48 hours of confirmed entanglements.

  • Emergency responses may include zonal or statewide closures.
